Tory Lanez has released a statement following his prison cell raid

The ‘Prison Tapes’ series has been suspended until further notice.

The Canadian singer responds to the news of his cell being raided

Tory Lanez has been keeping his musical career active even while behind bars, but recent developments have put his efforts at risk. Over the past two months, Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar has been prolific, releasing a series of previously unheard tracks, known as the “Lost Tapes,” and compiling them into a playlist called the “Free Tory Playlist.”

However, his creative output faced a serious setback when his prison cell was raided. Despite this, Lanez continued to produce new music, which he dubbed the “Prison Tapes.”

Authorities recently removed recording equipment inside Lanez’s prison cell.

Ceasar McDowell, chief deputy on Tory’s legal team, tells TMZ Hip Hop that his client's recording tools were seized as part of a raid conducted by prison guards. McDowell was informed that inmates at the California Correctional Institution are “strictly forbidden” from possessing recording devices for a variety of reasons.

In a lengthy statement on Tuesday (Sept. 10), Lanez shared to his Instagram account moments ago, the Canadian rapper addressed his studio equipment being confiscated by prison guards, which has stopped his plans to release more music from prison. Lanez wrote,

“The rumors are true. ‘The Prison Tapes’ will be discontinued until further notice. However, I think it’s important that my fans know the truth about the crooked *ss sh*t that’s REALLY going on here. My cell was not raided and trashed because I learned how to record myself in prison or because I created ‘The Prison Tapes. I was shut down because the “HIGHER UPS” figured out what I was really doing with ‘The Prison Tapes’ and how many inmates were being helped in a life changing way because of them.”

Lanez noted that he’s witnessed inmates of color being mistreated since his 10-year prison stint kicked off last year. However, he believes he was placed behind bars to see for himself “firsthand the pain and oppression being inflicted” on those incarcerated.

See the full statement below.

Tory was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his involvement in the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion. He was found guilty on three charges in Dec. 2022, which included assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a concealed and loaded firearm in a vehicle and discharge of a firearm with gross negligence.

A judge denied Lanez's request to be released as his legal team worked on an appeal.
