On this date twenty years ago, Dwayne Carter Jr. set out on his solo musical journey and dropped his first album The Block Is Hot on the Cash Money/Universal imprint.
Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Carter Jr., First solo LP, Tha Block Is Hot, arrived later in 1999 and sold more than a million copies, but two subsequent releases, Lights Out (2000) and 500 Degreez (2002), were less popular with the public. Tha Block Is Hot, the album, begins as most Cash Money releases did at the time: with Mannie Fresh and Baby aka Birdman. Lil Wayne's solo debut album Tha Block Is Hot (1999) was certified platinum.
